SCANDISK - this utility is much like the old CHKDSK utilities but provides much better error checking of your hard disk. To start SCANDISK, type: SCANDISK and press . You choose the drive to scan and the program checks the integrity of directory and file structures, making corrections along the way. An option to run a surface scan will test for bad spots on your hard disk. Be aware that this surface scan can take 15-30 minutes to complete. Run SCANDISK once a month to ensure hard disk integrity. Do not run this command on network drives.
MSAV - this is Microsoft's Anti-Virus program. To run it type 'MSAV and press . With this program, you select a drive, test for, and remove viruses in memory and on the drive. It also reports changes to programs since the last time you ran MSAV. Running MSAV once a month, or after you've received files from outside sources such as the Internet, can prevent viruses from infecting your system.
DEFRAG - this utility can be used on a hard disk to de-fragment files. As files are repeatedly written to disk, it becomes fragmented, meaning pieces of the file are spread over several places on the surface of the disk. DEFRAG goes through the disk and puts the pieces back together so the file is contiguous - all together - on the disk. Running DEFRAG once a month can keep your disk running at its peak performance. Do not run DEFRAG on network drives.
