halFILE for Windows FAQ

Question 1: What is the fastest way to scan in a large number of documents?

Answer: Click the Multi-page button in the `batch' box on the scanner control panel screen and then scan a batch. Then, group the individual images into documents by browsing the list of images and clicking `end of document' or pressing the F5 button on the last page of each document.

Question 2: I have scanned and saved a batch of documents but now do not wish to keep them. How do I get rid of them?

Answer: You can do this two different ways:

A. Use Tools-Basket Status and highlight the group of documents that should be removed. Then select File-Remove Marked Entries from the menu.

Or

B. As you index the documents, when you encounter a document that should be removed, select `Delete Document' from the Save menu.

Question 3: When I look at a directory of my optical disk cartridge, it says I have 30 MB of free space, but when I archive, it fails. Why is this?

Answer: Many optical disk drivers do not exactly calculate the amount of overhead used to maintain the directories for a cartridge. As more and more files are added to a cartridge, the actual space on the cartridge is not what is reported to DOS. Normally, there is a utility that you can periodically run against a cartridge to correct this problem. For COREL optical disk drivers, this utility is CHKMEDIA.

Question 4: I get an `Device not capable of printing' error when I try to print an image. What causes this?

Answer: Image printing is accomplished using the KOFAX KF-940 Software Engine. Be sure this has been installed on the computer and that it is the first software engine listed in the KOFAX control panel of engine.

Question 5: I ran archive and nothing was copied to the optical disk because it was full. Now all the entries in the queue say 'ARCHIVE IN PROGRESS'. How can I archive these images to another cartridge?

Answer: Use Tools-Basket Status to change the status of a document back to Index Complete so the document will be archived when you run the archive.

Question 6: How do you set up a new cartridge for halFILE for Windows?

Answer: This is a 2-step process. The first step is to format the cartridge and depends on the type of cartridge it is and what platform you are using to place optical disks onto your computer system. For optical disk drives that use COREL drivers, use the CFORMAT utility to format the cartridge. For SCSI Express, format a new cartridge from the Netware 3.11 server console by loading 'INSTALL' and defining a new disk drive.

The second part of defining a new cartridge involves giving the cartridge a name that halFILE will recognize. Use Configure-Cartridge to assign the name and let it initialize the cartridge. This initialize step simply copies a file called OPTICAL.HAL to the cartridge. This file contains the name of the cartridge.

Question 7: I split some images incorrectly and now need to move images from one document to a new document.

Answer: Use Tools-Move to load a document and either rearrange pages with a document or move selected pages to another document.

Question 8: How do you convert the image database from MS-Access to SQL Server?

Answer: We have converted many Access databases to SQL Server. You need to purchase the SQL support upgrade from your sales representative. Then hal Technical Support personnel will coordinate the database conversion.

Question 9: Can I put COLD Text Files into halFILE for Windows?

Answer: With an add-on Text File Support package you can. You need to purchase this product through your sales representative. The COLD Text File Support feature lets you filter, split and import text files into a halFILE for Windows database. Text Files can co-exist with images.

Question 10: Can I place Word documents in halFILE for Windows?

Answer: With version 1.3SQL or later you can. We call it Associated File Support and any document for which you can set up a Windows association can be imported into halFILE. For Associated documents, the viewer is the native application.
